Picture-in-picture is a really useful feature that can help you do multiple things at once on your computer. You could be taking notes on a YouTube video, listening to a webinar, or keeping half an eye on a live stream. In this post, I’m going to give you a couple of different ways that you can use the YouTube picture-in-picture mode in Chrome to help you do just that.

Method 1: Right-Click Twice

The first method for YouTube Picture-in-Picture mode is less obvious than you might think. However, it is just a couple of clicks away. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Find the video you want to watch on
  2. Right-Click on the video to show the YouTube context menu
  3. Now right-click again to show the Chrome context menu
  4. Select Picture-in-Picture to pop the YouTube video player out to the corner of your screen

Right-clicking the video twice in a row is not very intuitive, but if you do it right, you will see a menu like the one above where you can activate the YouTube picture-in-picture mode.

Method 2: Chrome Media Controls

Another way to activate YouTube’s picture-in-picture mode is to use the Chrome Media Controls. The media controls button has a music note on it and appears in the top right-hand corner of your browser when you have a YouTube video open in another tab. Here’s how it works.

  1. Find the video you want to watch on
  2. Click the Chrome Media Controls button
  3. Click the Picture-in-Picture button to the right of the playback controls

Tips for Using YouTube Picture-in-Picture Mode

  • When you enter picture-in-picture mode for the first time, the video may not be exactly where you want it on your screen. To remedy this, simply click and drag it to the location you want it.
  • If the video player is not big enough, you can drag the corner of a YouTube picture-in-picture window to resize it. You can’t go full screen, but you can make it bigger than the default size.
  • The picture-in-picture video will play on top of anything else on your computer. You can open new tabs or even other apps on your device and the video will still be front and center for you to watch or take notes on.
  • To return the picture-in-picture window to the tab where you found it, simply hover over the video and click, Back to Tab.
