Have you ever wished that your school or teacher website had just that little bit more flair? It’s easy to wish for, but unless you have the skills of a graphic designer in-house, and some powerful editing software, it can be difficult to achieve. Until now. Canva is a free, easy to use, online design tool that could be used by teachers and students to create professional quality graphics in no time at all.
As you can see in the screenshot above, there are several templates to get you started, but you can also create a design with custom dimensions for something like a website header that might need exact specifications.
Once you pick the template you want, the editor will open with full customization options to make this design your own. It is very simple to use. The search tab on the left lets you search through a bank of images that you can use in your design. There are a huge number of free images and graphics here, but also a selection of premium images which can be bought for $1 each if needed.
The layout tab lets you choose from a number of stylish photo frames to arrange images, while the text tab has a large number of fonts and text icons to choose from. In the background tab you can choose a solid color or textured background for your design, while the Upload tab lets you bring your own images up to Canva to use in your design.
Finished images can be saved and downloaded as a PDF or a PNG. However, you can also share your design with others via a URL, and have the option of letting the recipient view or edit your design. This could be great if you wanted to have students work on a design as part of a project and have them send you a link to their work. Canva can also be used to create a photo book, or eBook, because you can have multiple pages in your design. Want to spruce up a Google Site? Canva is perfect for that too.
Still not sure you have the design flair required? Canva have added a few in app tutorials and design challenges to help you get started and find your way around. They are designed to teach you some design basics too, so make sure you look for them on your dashboard when logged in.
